What Will the Internet Be Like in the Next 50 Years?

On October 29th, 1969, a message was sent from a rather nondescript room at UCLA in Southern California to a Stanford Research Institute computer console in Menlo Park, California. It read simply “Lo,” though it was supposed to say “Login.” The system crashed before completing the task. This was the world’s first message sent via an interconnected computer network known as ARPANET. On this unassuming fall day, the modern internet as we now know was conceived.
In the five decades since, the internet has transformed human existence. From how we wage war to how we make each other laugh, it’s unfathomable how much the internet has shaped life in that short amount of time.

MIUI 10 Unveiled: Check If Your Phone Will Get it Too

MIUI 10 was unveiled by Xiaomi at its annual launch event on Thursday, which also saw the launch of the Mi 8. The Chinese company claims that its newest Android-based operating system is powered by AI. One of the biggest highlights of MIUI 10 is the AI Portrait feature, which offers software-based Bokeh functionality on any smartphone running the new operating system - whether single camera or dual camera. Xiaomi at the event also detailed other new features that would arrive with MIUI 10, including a new Recents widget, AI Preload, and integrated smart home device support. The company also revealed timelines for the launch of the China Developer ROM, as well as a list of eligible devices.

Xiaomi Phones Eligible for MIUI 10

Starting with the eligible devices, MIUI 10 will come to a number of smartphones in the company's portfolio, according toXiaomi. Starting today, June 1, the closed beta MIUI 10 China Developer ROM will be available for Mi 8, Mi Mix 2S, Mi Mix 2, Mi Mix, Mi 6X, Mi 6, Mi 5, Mi Note 2, Redmi S2, and Redmi Note 5 smartphones. The public beta has been slated for late-June, with the same eligible devices. In late July, the public beta will be made available for the Mi Note 3, Mi 5X, Mi 5c, Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 4, Mi 4c, Mi 4S, Mi Max 2, Mi Max, Redmi 5, Redmi 5A, Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi 4, Redmi 4A, Redmi 4X, Redmi 3S/ Redmi 3X, Redmi Pro, Redmi Note 5A, Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm/ Redmi Note 4X, Redmi Note 4 (MediaTek), and Redmi Note 3 (Qualcomm).
Let's start with MIUI 10's AI Portrait feature. The company says users with smartphones running MIUI 10 will be able to take Bokeh depth-of-field shots without requiring a dual camera setup. The feature is software based, using algorithms to identify the foreground and blur out the background.
MIUI 10's new Recents widget
Next up in MIUI 10 is the new Recents widget, which now features a new layout that maximises screen space, supports full screen gestures, lets users swipe to delete tasks, and long press to get more options.
Another new feature in MIUI 10 is AI Preload, which the company claims will help reduce load times for apps and native UI functions to zero, as the software would have already preloaded the app based on the user's usage patterns.
MIUI 10's smart home integration
Finally, Xiaomi also said it is bringing the ability to control Mi Ecosystem devices directly to MIUI 10, without the need of a secondary app for the purpose. For now, not much else has been detailed by Xiaomi about MIUI 10, but you can check out the video above if you understand Mandarin.

WhatsApp Business finally rolls out for Android — and it’s totally free (for now)

After years of waiting and limited trials, businesses finally have their own WhatsApp solution. The company today launched the simply-named WhatsApp Business, available on Android devices as a free download.
The app provides some of the basic functionality you’d want from a business app. You can create a Business profile with additional information like a description, address, and contact information, and enable quick replies for answers to common questions. You can create greeting messages and view some simple analytics so you can see which messages are most effective.
According a WhatsApp spokesperson, the current feature set will remain free in the long term, but WhatsApp plans on charging for additional capabilities in the future. Basically it’ll eventually take on a freemium model, but at least the company doesn’t plan on taking away any existing features, and you are getting a fair bit of functionality to start.
The app is already up and running from the Google Play Store in Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, the U.K. and the U.S. The rest of the world will be able to access the app “in the coming weeks.”

MIUI 9 comes with Game Speed Booster, here’s how it works

MIUI 9 update was announced in July, and a global rollout began on November 2. Xiaomi said that 40 devices would get the latest version of the user interface, including phones from 2012.

One of the new features of MIUI 9 is smart system optimizations to make the device run faster. It comes with Game Booster that should improve the overall performance of games, and here’s how to make it work. We tested it on the Redmi Note 5A, but the feature is available on any phone running the stable MIUI 9 ROM.
The Xiaomi Security app is used for clearing cache and running security checks, but scrolling down you'll see Tools, one of which is “Gaming speed boost”. Memory is cleaned right away, but to allocate power efficiently, you have to add the game you want to play undisturbed.
The Booster has its own Settings panel that comes with some neat features. To enjoy a more fluid game experience, you can turn off all notifications except for incoming calls, turn off the trio of hardware/software buttons and even prevent switching networks, if you are using both SIM cards.
When everything is optimized, games should run faster, but some devices and their chipsets might heat excessively, so proceed with caution.
